While visits to a psychiatrist are covered by OHIP (requires Dr. referral, usually 3 month waiting period), psychological services are not covered by OHIP. Many people have coverage through extended health care plans provided by their employer. Their benefits package outlines what is covered (e.g., dentist, psychologist). The client pays the therapist directly, and then submits their receipt to the insurance company to be reimbursed.
Coverage is usually described as 80% up to a certain limit (e.g. covers 80% up to $1000.) While the therapist does not require a referral, in some cases the insurance company requires the client to obtain a referral from their doctor in order to be covered. Most doctors are quite willing to provide this for their patients. Receipts can also be used as a tax deduction.
My fees are covered by most extended health care plans.
